Understanding Creator Royalties on Solana Marketplaces

When you mint a Solana NFT, the metadata specifies a royalty percentage — often 5–10% — paid to creators on secondary sales. Enforcement depends on marketplace policy and buyer settings, not the blockchain alone.

On-chain vs off-chain enforcement

Metaplex royalty standards embed the percentage in token metadata. Marketplaces choose whether to honour it at checkout. Some venues make royalty payment optional for sellers, which affects creator income on secondary trades.

What creators should decide at mint time

Choose a royalty rate before mainnet deployment — changing it later requires migration tools not all collections support. In our creator workshop, we walk through setting royalties in common minting platforms and explain trade-offs between higher rates and marketplace listing visibility.

Collector perspective

Royalties fund ongoing art from creators you support. When comparing listings, note whether the marketplace displays royalty-inclusive pricing. A lower sticker price with royalties paid separately may equal a higher all-in listing elsewhere.
