How to Read On-Chain Metadata Before You Buy
When browsing Magic Eden or Tensor, it is tempting to judge a piece by its preview image alone. Experienced Solana collectors know the metadata JSON — linked from the mint address on explorers like Solscan — holds the authoritative record of traits, creator royalties, and whether the image URI points to Arweave, IPFS, or a central server.
Start with the mint address
Copy the mint address from the listing page. Paste it into Solscan or SolanaFM. Look for the Metadata tab. You should see a JSON URI field. Open that URI in a new tab. Verify the name, symbol, attributes array, and image URL match what the marketplace displays.
Check image permanence
Arweave links typically contain arweave.net. IPFS links use ipfs.io or a dedicated gateway. If the image URL points to a generic web host with no content-addressing, the artwork could change or disappear. This does not automatically mean the collection is risky, but it is a factor worth weighing against the asking price.
Verify creator and royalty settings
The metadata JSON includes a creators array with share percentages. Cross-reference these against the collection's stated team. Mismatches occasionally appear on unauthorised derivative mints. Royalty enforcement varies by marketplace, so treat on-chain creator fields as the source of truth for attribution.
